The Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) designation is managed by the Bureau of Health Professions Office of Shortage Designation. They are used to determine where in the country National Health Service Corps (NHSC) participants can practice in fulfillment of their obligations within the NHSC programs. They also help determine whether a physician might qualify for a bonus payment from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services, for providing health care in a qualifying area of need. HPSAs and MUA/Ps are created from collections of counties and sub-county geographic units; the HPSA and MUA/P Geographic Compilation Logic page describes in detail how the HRSA Data Warehouse creates the geographic boundaries from the business data.

The chart below shows the number of currently-designated HPSAs, by discipline. The criteria for designation varies from one discipline to another, and there is no intrinsic relationship between them: an area may be considered to have a shortage of practitioners in any or all of the disciplines independently.
