Primary Care Service Areas - 2003 edition

The 2003 edition of the PCSA database contains nationwide data United States primary health care resources, populations and utilization, compiled and presented in newly developed units of analysis (Primary Care Service Areas) and related to other geopolitical regions.

PCSAs were developed by aggregating ZIP Code Tabulation Areas.

Download PCSA data in dbf format. With the exception of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) data, missing data are identified as -99; in the CMS data the suppression rules apply to the Medicare variables.

Primary Care Service Area
(PCSA)
  • 6,542 observations
  • 927 variables. Each variable starts with P.
  • Medicare utilization data (inpatient, outpatient and ambulatory services) also available; 6,542 observations and 43 variables; all start with P.
  • Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services suppression rules apply to the Medicare variables.
 
ZIP Code Tabulation Areas
(ZCTA)
  • 32,011 observations
  • 915 variables. Each variable starts with Z.
  • Medicare utilization data (inpatient, outpatient and ambulatory services)also available; 32,011 observations and 106 variables; all start with Z.
  • Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services suppression rules apply to the Medicare variables.
 
Census Tract
  • 35,414 observations
  • 864 variables; with the exception of the IDs, state name and state abbreviation, each variable starts with T.
Minor Civil Division
(MCD)
  • 35,414 observations
  • 240 variables; with the exception of the IDs, state and county names and abbreviations and state and county FIPS codes; each variable starts with B.
Metropolitan Statistical Area
(MSA)
 
  • 276 observations
  • 240 variables; with the exception of the IDs and names, each variable starts with A.
Congressional District
(106th Congress)
  • 436 observations
  • 191 variables; with the exception of the state name and FIPS code and the congressional district name and number, each variable starts with D.
